Dr. Álvaro Hermida, MD, PhD

Dr. Álvaro Hermida was born in Bilbao (Basque Country, Spain) in 1974. He was licensed in Medicine and Surgery by the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1998, and completed his training as specialist in Internal Medicine in the Hospital Clínico Universitario de Santiago. His professional career has been devoted to diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases and their main risk factors.

He achieved the PhD degree Cum Laude in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2003 and his investigational work in the field of oxidative stress was awarded the best PhD thesis that same year by the University of Santiago. He has a Master in Cardiovascular Diseases by the Universoty of Barcelona and has been certified as a Hypertension Specialist by the European Society of Hypertension.

At present, he is Professor in the Medicine Department in the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) and manages the Continuing-education course in Cardiovascular Risk for healthcare providers.

Dr. Hermida runs the Hypertension and Vascular Medicine Institute (HIMEVAS) in the Hospital Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza (Santiago de Compostela), a high-tech centre directed to the early detection of sub-clinical vascular damage (arteriosclerosis), that is, to diagnose the disease before the appearance of the first symptoms.

He is author of many research works reported in high-impact scientific journals in the field of oxidative stress, hypertension and cardiovascular risk, among others and has received several awards and recognition from the European Society of Hypertension and from the Spanish Societies of both Hypertension and Internal Medicine. He currently belongs to the review committee of the European Journal of Internal Medicine and is member of the European Society of Hypertension and European Federation of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Belén Cabana, MD (Physician consultant)

Dr. Belén Cabana (Lugo) licensed in Medicine and Surgery by the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1998, and is specialist in Family and Community Medicine. She has devoted her professional life to the care of patients with chronic diseases (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, heart failure...) and to Emergency Medicine.

She has worked as Medical Manager in a health and social care centre for elderly subjects where she developed a dependency prevention program with special attention to cardiovascular rehabilitation and prevention of adverse drug reaction.

Dr. Cabana is an instructor in Basic and Advanced Cardiopulmonary Support and has worked as Coordinator Physician in the Fundación Pública de Urgencias Sanitarias-061 de Galicia.

She now coordinates and implements preventing action and health promotion programs in active working population and participates in research about occupational diseases.

Dr. Tomás Ernesto Verdura González, MD

Dr. Tomás Ernesto Verdura González was born in La Habana (Cuba) in 1969. He was licensed in Medicine and Surgery by the Instituto Superior de Ciencias Médicas de La Habana in 1994, and completed his training as specialist in Basic and Clinical Immunology in the same institution.

He worked as an assistant specialist in the Clinical Paediatric Immunology Service and in the Immunogenetics Service in the Instituto de Hematología e Inmunología de La Habana. That year he moved to Spain, where he continued his training and research work in the Microbiology Service in the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario de Santiago de Compostela until 2004.

He achieved the Master of Advanced Studies by the University of Santiago de Compostela in 2004 and the title of specialist in Allergology and Clinical Immunology in 2008. He has taken training and updating courses in Advanced Life Support in the Intensive Care Unit in the Fundación Hospital Alcorcón in Madrid.

He has worked and collaborated in assistance and research in the Immunology, Allergology, Microbiology, Paediatrics, Internal Medicine and Emergency Services in several hospitals in Madrid and Galicia. He currently works in the Hospital Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza in Santiago de Compostela, where he lives with his family.
